Jewish Cemeteries
One of our crucial tasks at the Petryakova Center is to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the Jewish people in Ukraine and to draw attention to the challenges of doing so. To this end, we have launched a large-scale initiative for the protection and preservation of sacred Jewish burial grounds and memorial places. We implement this initiative by monitoring the compliance of local authorities throughout Ukraine with the laws concerning cultural heritage preservation. When it comes to Jewish cultural heritage in Ukraine, we pay very close attention to the treatment of Jewish cemeteries. We regularly set out on research field trips across western Ukraine, particularly in the region of Halychyna (Galicia), to evaluate conditions of known Jewish cemeteries and unearth new ones. Many Jewish cemeteries in Ukraine have tombstones that, aside from their innate spiritual value, can be considered genuine masterpieces, which we endeavor to save from decay and preserve for future generations.
The U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad compiled a cemetery table, which provides essential details on the location and condition of numerous Jewish cemeteries across Ukraine. More information can be found at: http://heritageabroad.gov/Countries/Ukraine.aspx
Also, please find below a list of Jewish cemeteries that we visited and researched personally. Upon request, we would be happy to provide you with a detail record concerning the site you are interested in. Our mission is to preserve and protect these sacred sites. Please don't hesitate to send us your inquiries.
